It was aimed to verify the effect of the presence of trees and their heights in silvipastoral system on the intake behavior of Nellore heifers in the summer. Ten heifers for the following systems were used: system without shade, silvipastoral system with 8-meter and 18-meter trees. Abstract The leaf of the jaborandi (Pilocarpus microphyllus) is the part of the plant of economic interest, from which the pilocarpine is extracted, therefore, leaf production is the main variable that determines the productivity of this species. Pilocarpus leaf production can be managed during its development phase. Thus, the objective of the present study was to evaluate branch regeneration of jaborandi submitted to two types of cutting/pruning and different cropping systems. Prunings were carried out in jaborandi plants from different accessions from the Janorandi Active Germoplasm Bank (BGA), that were under different cropping systems, full sun and shade. A cultura do cafeeiro ocupa papel de elevada importância na agricultura e na economia brasileira. O café é uma importante commodity agrícola de exportação no mundo e, dentre os países produtores, o Brasil ocupa posição de destaque, sendo o maior produtor e exportador mundial. O cafeeiro pode ser conduzido a pleno sol ou sombreado e os maiores benefícios fisiológicos que o cafeeiro recebe das árvores de sombra estão associados à redução do estresse da planta, pela melhoria do microclima e do solo. O objetivo do presente estudo é avaliar o efeito de diferentes níveis de radiação solar no crescimento e produtividade do cafeeiro.

El experimento se realizó en Cárdenas, Tabasco en una plantación de plátano macho, en un suelo con textura franca, pH moderadamente ácido, contenido de materia orgánica y nitrógeno total bajo; con la finalidad de evaluar la repuesta al establecimiento de Arachis pintoi Krap. y Greg. como una cobertura viva, el cual se plantó a una distancia de 30 cm entre plantas y líneas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of availability of artificial shading on testicular and seminal characteristics of Santa Ines crossbred rams. Twelve 8 month old rams at 38.1 ± 5.2 kg average weight, were used in a total random design with two treatments: areas with and without available artificial shading (black polyethylene mesh screen for a 50% reduction of solar radiation). The scrotal circumference, scrotal length, scrotal volume, rectal temperature and scrotal temperature were measured twice a week. Intensity of bitterness of processed yerba mate leaves originated in two contrasted light environments BABT

The bitterness intensity of beverage prepared from the leaves produced on the males and females of yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis), grown in the forest understory and monoculture, was evaluated. The leaves were grouped by their position (in the crown and on the branch tips) and by the leaf age. The leaf gas exchange, leaf temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density were observed. Inter and intra-specific competition for light and self-shading showed the same effect on yerba mate beverage taste. All the shading types resulted in bitterer taste of the processed yerba mate leaves compared to the leaves originated under the direct sun exposure. The ecophysiological behavior of brazilwood (Caesalpinia echinata Lam.) plants was evaluated as affected by light quantity and quality. Nine-month-old plants were cultivated under 0%, 50%, and 80% artificial shading, and natural shading imposed by a closed canopy for a period of 392 days. At the end of that period growth parameters were measured, including relative growth rate (RGR), net assimilation rate (NAR), leaf area ratio (LAR), specific leaf mass (SLM) and root:shoot ratio (R:S). Higher leaf area, dry mass and RGR were obtained under 50% artificial shade. Under full sunlight (0% shade), growth was satisfactory showing higher R:S and SLM. This study evaluated the microclimate in a system without shade (WS) and in a silvopastoral system (SP) with eucalyptus during summer and winter, by measuring the air temperature (Ta), black globe temperature (Tg), relative humidity (RH), wind speed (Ws), every 2 hours for 24 hours between rows, shade (SP) and no shade effect (WS). It was employed the randomized blocks design (months), in the plots (systems), subplots (hours) and sub-subplots (seasons). Morphological and physiological responses of Cedrela Fissilis Vellozo (Meliaceae) seedlings to light BABT

Seeds of Cedrela fissilis Vellozo were planted and maintained under two distinct conditions: at east border of a forest with red: far-red ratio of 1.15 and under canopy with photosynthetic photon flux density of 0.22-7% of full sun radiation and red: far-red ratio of 0.21-0.36. Seedling growth (height and stem diameter) was faster under sun, the development of roots more continuous and the number of leaves almost twice of that of shade plants. The leaf area was 10 times greater in sun plants with 15-25 leaflets per leaf while under shade only 5 to 10 leaflets were found per leaf. Seedling growth of fifteen Brazilian tropical tree species differing in successional status Rev. Bras. Bot.

Growth of seedlings of fifteen tropical tree species representative, at the adult stage, of different successional positions, was studied under field conditions. Seedlings were grown in three treatments: full sun (FS), artificial shade imposed by neutral screens (AS) and natural shade imposed by a closed canopy in a Forest Reserve in Southeast Brazil (NS). Most of the studied species survived in both shade treatments, although their growth was severely affected. Seedling growth of understorey species of a Southeast Brazilian tropical forest BABT

Thirteen understorey species of a mesophyllous tropical forest were studied under two different photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD). Seedlings were grown in the glasshouse under 51% and 2.6% solar PPFD. Growth of the seedlings was evaluated by 1-) total height; 2-) leaf number; 3-) leaf dry mass;4-) stem dry mass; 5-) root dry mass; 6-) stem length/mass; 7-)shoot/root mass; 8-) percent allocation to leaf, stem and roots. For most of the parameters recorded, low PPFD drastically reduced growth. It seemed that the strategy of these understorey species was a reduction of growth under low PPFD saving energy for survival.

Foram avaliados o comportamento, as variáveis fisiológicas e o desempenho de bezerros Holandês e mestiços desmamados em diferentes telas de polipropileno e horas de fornecimento de concentrado. Utilizaram-se 24 bezerros, nove da raça Holandesa (H) e 15 mestiços de Holandês (MH), em piquetes parcialmente cobertos com tela de polipropileno com malha de 70 (S70) e 40% (S40) de sombra, recebendo concentrado em três horários: manhã (M), tarde (T) e dias alternados (DA). O açaí-solteiro (Euterpe precatoria Mart.) é uma palmeira nativa do Estado do Acre, sendo a produção de polpa oriunda do extrativismo. A procura pelo produto é grande e crescente no Brasil e no mundo, estimulando plantios comerciais. No entanto, poucas são as informações sobre a produção de mudas em viveiros e cultivo dessa espécie. ABSTRACT: Ruminants vary their walking trajectory according to the positioning of the trees in integrated systems, which can determine the concentration of dung deposition at certain locations. The aim of this study was to map the distribution of feces and the behavior of dairy heifers in sunny and shaded areas. This experiment was carried out in Mato Grosso, Brazil, where the main grazing conditioner is shade due to the presence of trees in the pastures. ABSTRACT The objective was to investigate the effects of available shaded area on behavioural characteristics of lactating cows during the warm season in the subtropics. Twelve Holstein cows were divided into groups, with 2 (SH2) or 10 m2 (SH10) of available shade per cow (six cows per treatment). The behaviour was recorded when animals were grazing from 09.00 to 16.00 h (GMT −02.00 h) throughout the trial. Data considered in the statistical analysis were restricted to the five days when the maximum temperature was ≥ 25 °C. Cows in the SH10 group had lower panting score, but higher proportions of time in shade and lying down and stayed more time per visit in the shaded area than cows in the SH2 group.
